Although it may not seem like it on the surface, when children are playing, they are learning profoundly. Mindful playing invites children to connect with the activity at hand. Whether it be playing with Legos, sculpting with Play-Doh, or creating art, play can be a practice that nurtures creativity, focus, and of course joy! Throughout our Montessori-inspired programs, whether at our Irvington, Sunnyvale, Hercules or other Bay Area campuses, we encourage “mindfulness” among the children, and a calm patience-centered learning experience.
Legos are a prime example of learning through play. Building often involves trial and error, leaving children to figure out how they can stabilize their Lego creations. This activity unknowingly teaches problem-solving and creativity to the young architect. It is also a beautifully created fine motor skill tool that strengthens hand-eye coordination.
Play-Doh is a feast for the senses —the colors, squishy texture, and earthy scent. When playing with this tool they enhance their sensory skills and advance their motor development. Children can create anything that comes to mind by squishing, rolling, molding, and shaping. Play-Doh fosters imagination, problem-solving, self-expression and can also be a therapeutic activity.
Outdoor play is where physical activity meets social interaction here at LAPMS. We encourage group games and sharing equipment which in turn fosters cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution. Of course, with outdoor play, there is also physical development such as improving gross motor skills and enhancing coordination. This part of a child’s day promotes cardiovascular health, develops habits of exercising, and gets them exposed to fresh air and sunlight.
Being mindful of the types of play our students engage in ensures they are participating in activities that nurture their growth on multiple levels. Whether building Legos or exploring the outdoors, these experiences are far more than simple play—they are opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, and development. Each activity is carefully chosen to challenge and stimulate their bright minds, laying a foundation for both learning and joy. If you are a parent or guardian, and you live in one of our diverse communities such as Danville, Dublin, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, Hercules, etc., reach out to us for a campus tour. You can see “mindfulness” at work among the children, and determine if our Montessori-inspired STEM programs might be right for you and your family.
