Earth Day at Home

Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22nd to bring awareness to environmental issues while encouraging people to take action to protect the planet. Protecting, caring for, and respecting our planet is of the utmost importance. At LAPMS, teaching our students a love for our planet is something that we practice year-round. Many of our students have experienced gardening, lessons on recycling, and actively learn about geography, botany, and zoology during cultural studies. Although Earth Day is every day, we love participating in this holiday and showing some extra love to our beautiful planet. We encourage you to partake in Earth Day with these three activities at home!

  1. Earth craft

Creating a visual of Earth isn’t just a fun craft—it gives our young learners a meaningful visual connection to our beautiful planet. It helps them see the Earth as something real, unique, and worth caring for. This activity can be done in various ways! Through painting, coloring, construction paper mosaics, or even using natural materials such as leaves and flowers! This activity fosters appreciation and environmental stewardship.

  1. Nature walks and object sorting

A great way to celebrate Earth Day is outside! Check out the cornucopia of parks we have, especially in the East Bay. Going on a nature walk and collecting leaves, twigs, and flowers while breathing fresh air is a fun hands-on activity that can also prompt questions from your child, such as “Why do bees love flowers?” Having a box or bag with you during the walk is encouraged, as our nature goodies can be used for a sorting game once we are done collecting! For the sorting portion, you can have your child sort by size, color, weight, or texture. This completed activity encourages observation, classification, and fine motor skills—perfect tools for future science experiments in class.

  1. Recycling Station

“Reduce, reuse, and recycle” is an environmental slogan that has been used for decades. Teaching our students how to recycle implements this healthy habit at a young age and contributes to our goal of making our planet a cleaner, healthier place! In this activity, your child can sort household materials—such as different types of paper, plastic, and cardboard into separate bins. This helps them not only recognize and differentiate between materials but also understand what belongs in the recycling bin. When we teach our children the importance of this practice, they learn environmental responsibility.
